(1)从不完整句到完整句。
①最初儿童句子的结构是不完整的。儿童的不完整句包括单词句和电报句。单词句是指用一个词代表的句子，一般出现于1至1岁半。单词句有下特点。第一，所用的词并不是单独和某种对象相联系，而是和某种情境相联系。第二，单词句含义不够明确，语音也往往不够清晰，不能完全表达自己的意思，因此，必须辅以表情和动作。第三，由于单词句表意不够清楚，成人除了根据儿童说话时的表情和动作外，还必须根据说话的情境来推断其意义。因此，一般只有与儿童亲近的人才能听得懂。电报句又称双词句，是由2~3个单词组成的不完整句。一般出现于1岁半至2岁左右，其表达的意思比单词句明确，因为它已具备句子的雏形。电报句的主要特点是语句断续、简略，结构不完整，句子的成分常常缺漏，主要使用名词、动词、形容词等实词，而略去连词、介词、指示词、助词等虚词，类似人们打电报时所用的语言。②儿童2岁以后，逐渐出现比较完整的句子。完整句的数量和比例随年龄的增长而增长。到6岁左右，儿童98％以上使用完整句。
(2)从简单句到复合句。
简单句指句法结构完整的单句。复合句指由两个或两个以上意思关联比较密切的单句组成的句子。儿童复合句的特点有：数量较少，比例不大；结构松散，缺乏连词，只是简单句意义上的结合；联合复句出现较早；并列复句比例大。
(3)从无修饰句到修饰句。
儿童最初的句子是没有修饰语的。2～3岁儿童有时出现一些修饰语的形式，3岁至3岁半是复杂修饰语句的数量增长最快的年龄。3岁儿童较多使用行动状语，4岁儿童还使用一些地点状语，5岁和6岁儿童除行动状语和地点状语外，还出现了一定数量的时间状语。
(4)从陈述句到非陈述句。
儿童最初掌握的是陈述句。在整个学前期，简单的陈述句仍然是基本的句型。儿童常用的句型除陈述句外，还有疑问句、祈使句、感叹句等。
