民间音乐一般是指在民间形成并流传于民间的各种音乐体裁，例如我国的民间歌曲、民间舞蹈音乐、民间器乐、民间戏曲和说唱音乐等。我国民间音乐具有以下六种特点： (1)创作的口头性和集体性。我国的民间音乐主要是以口头创作、口头流传的方式生存于民间，并在流传过程中不断经受人民群众集体的筛选、改造、加工、提炼，随着岁月的流逝而日臻完美。
(2)乡土性。所谓乡土性，也叫地方性或地域性。在地形上，有高原、山地、丘陵、平原和盆地。在气候上，有四季分明的温带、终年常绿的亚热带、最南部还有热带。在经济生产方式上有工、农、林、牧、渔等不同种类。因此．在大民族、大文化的共同性之下，各地区的地理气候、自然生产条件、社会变迁、文化传统、方言语音等等都有不同的特色。乡土性又表现在语言特征、性格特征、音乐特征三个具体方面。
(3)即兴性。我国民间音乐的基本传播方式是口传心授。老歌手、老艺人或师傅在传艺时凭借演唱演奏，新歌手、年轻艺人或徒弟在学艺时凭借听觉和记忆，基本上不采用书面乐谱的传承方式。这一方面使我国的民间音乐至今没有完善的记谱方法，另一方面又使所有优秀的歌手、艺人有机会在继承下来的民间音乐中发挥才智，对民间音乐进行加工改编。民间音乐的成果是千百年来人民集体智慧的结晶。口耳相传的传承方式，造成了民间音乐的不确定性和易变性，为集体加工提供了条件，而不断的集体加工又使世代流传的民间音乐日臻完美。
(4)流传变异性。民间音乐口传心授式的传播方式，以及乡土性、即兴性的特点，导致了它在流传过程中的变异性。这种变异性主要包括地域变异、情感渲染性变异、表现功能拓展新变异、体裁间相互交叉、渗透的变异。
(5)人民性。从《诗经》的《国风》开始，民间音乐就表现出了与统治阶级不同的普通老百姓的喜怒哀乐，如对劳动的歌颂、对为富不仁者的痛恨和嘲笑、对官府黑暗统治的不平和反抗、对穷苦人不幸遭遇的同情、对纯真爱情的赞美以及对美好生活的憧憬。
(6)多功能性。专业音乐的功能是他娱的，在舞台上为听众演出。民间音乐则具有多功能性。它可以是自娱的．在愁苦之至或喜悦之极时，唱上一曲以发泄强烈的感情。它也可能是他娱的，在众人面前炫耀自己驾驭音乐的能力。得到他人的赞赏和爱慕。它可以作为传送青年男女问感情的媒介，也可以用于红白喜事的仪式。它可以是集体劳动时的组织、指挥者，也可以是传授生产、生活知识的手段。它可以在不识字的劳动人民中间充当记载岁月变迁的史书，又可以作为宣扬民族英雄光辉业绩的教本。它可以是儿童的游戏，也可是长辈或首领对民众的鼓动、号召等等。民间音乐的多功能性，使之与人民生活的各个侧面息息相关、密不可分，成为民间的百科全书。
