人类社会进入20世纪以后，随着哲学、人文社会科学、自然科学、教育科学的发展以及人们价值观念 的变化，教育目的观也呈现出多元化的趋向，最具代表性的有三种，即人文主义教育目的观、科学主义 教育目的观和科学人文主义教育目的观。
(1)人文主义教育目的观观点。
人文主义者认为人性是美好的，并且是永恒不变的，教育的本质和根本目的就是培育人性，使美好的 人性得以展示和发挥。无论在何时何地，人性依然如故，教育亦依然如故。人文主义者主张，理性是 人的最高价值，这种理性是指价值理性，而非工具理性和科学理性。
(2)科学主义教育目的观观点。
科学主义教育目的观是以社会性需要为出发点和归宿，以科学为中心的功利性教育目的观。它是伴 随着科学的发展以及科学功能的日益显现而产生的。20世纪以来持这种教育目的观的教育哲学流 派主要有实用主义教育和学科结构主义教育。
(3)科学人文主义教育目的观观点。
科学人文主义教育目的观是以科学精神为基础，以人文精神为价值方向的教育目的观。科学人文主 义既信奉科学，又崇尚人道，它以科学为基础和手段，以人文为方向和目的。科学人文的最高目的是 在科学和人文的相互协调、相互补充中促进人和社会在物质和精神两个方面的和谐发展，并在此基础 上实现人的解放。
