课堂纪律的维持与教师的威信、领导作风、班级人数的多少、学生年龄特征、班风、班集体的性质等等因素都有密切的联系。根据课堂纪律形成的原因，可以将课堂纪律分成四种类型：
(1)教师促成的纪律。教师促成的纪律应该包括结构的创设和体贴。教师的指导、监督、惩罚、规定限制、奖励、操纵、组织、安排日程和维护标准等，都属于结构的创设。而体贴则包括同情、理解、调解、协助、支持、征求和采纳学生的意见等。这对儿童、青少年纪律的形成是不可缺少的。刚入学的小学生往往需要教师给予较多的监督和指导，需要教师为他们的学习和工作设置一个有结构的情境，即组织一个良好的集体结构。即使是比较成熟的青少年学生，他们还是需要教师为他们的行为提供指导。所以，在课堂管理中，教师促成的纪律是不可缺少的。
(2)集体促成的纪律。从入学开始，学生开始了真正的集体生活，同辈人的集体在学生社会化方面起着越来越大的作用。他们开始对同学察颜观色，以便决定应该如何思考、如何信仰和如何行事。为了得到群体的认同，开始参照群体准则、行为规范来规定自己的言行。比如学生加入团组织后，在遵守校规校纪方面会表现得更加模范。
(3)任务促成的纪律。每一项任务都有其特定的纪律，学生卷入任务的过程，就是接受纪律约束的过程。如课堂讨论与参观学习各有不同的纪律。任务促成的纪律是以个人对活动任务的充分理解为前提的。学生对任务的理解越深刻，就越能把眼前的行动与任务联系起来，越能使自己的行为服从于任务的需要。如学生对课本剧的编写表演整体把握了，在改编创作、导演、排练、制作道具等方面都会积极主动地计划操作，直到任务完成。
(4)自我促成的纪律。随着社会化程度的提高，自治能力的增进，外部的纪律控制逐渐被个体内化成为个体自觉的行为准则，学生自觉地遵守正确的班级社会规范，养成良好的守纪习惯，自律便出现了。自律标志着人的成熟水平。
