贯彻理论联系实际原则的基本要求是：(1)书本知识的教学要注重联系实际。只有注意理论联系实际，教学才能生动活泼，使抽象的书本知识易于被学生理解、吸收，转化为对他们有用的精神财富，而不至于造成学生囫囵吞枣，掌握的是一大堆无用的空洞死板的概念。如在教学中联系学生的日常生活、科学知识在生产建设中的实际运用、联系当代最新科学成就的实际等。(2)重视培养学生运用知识的能力。首先要重视教学活动中的实践环节，如练习、实验、参观和实习等，其次还要重视引导学生参加实际操作和社会实践。教师应当根据教学的需要，组织学生进行参观、访问、社会调查，参加课外学科或科技小组的实际操作活动或组织他们从事一些科学观察、实验与发明以及生产劳动等。(3)正确处理知识教学与技能训练的关系。在教学中，只有将两者结合起来，学生才能深刻地理解知识，更好地掌握技能，达到学以致用的目的。如果只是教师讲，学生听，而无技能的训练，那么学生是否真正理解难以检验，动手能力也没有得到锻炼和培养。(4)补充必要的乡土教材。由于我国幅员辽阔，各地方的自然、社会、文化等方面的差异很大，为了使教学不脱离实际，必须充分利用当地丰富的资源开发乡土教材。
